Which Manufacturer Made 16.8% of All US Guns?

Mexico recently filed a $10 billion lawsuit against leading U.S. gun manufacturers such as Glock Inc., Beretta U.S.A. Corp., Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc., and Smith & Wesson Brands. The Mexican government shares that an estimated 70% of guns in Mexico are trafficked in from the United States, leading to a significant uptick in gun violence. As a result, the government argues, U.S. gun manufacturers are at least partially responsible for cartel violence and other violent homicides caused by firearms. The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether or not it will block the lawsuit. (Warning: you might die a violent death if you go to any of these countries.)

While the results of this lawsuit have yet to be seen, gun manufacturing and sales in the United States are not slowing down any time soon. Gun ownership rose during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with FBI background check data suggesting that Americans bought an estimated 22.8 million firearms in 2020, shattering the previous high of 16.7 million reported in 2016. More Americans than ever before are living in homes with guns — and many people have a preference as to which guns they bring into the home. Manufacturers such as Ruger, Sig Sauer, and Smith & Wesson (who account for a combined 41%+ of domestic firearm manufacturing, as of 2021) are favored by many. However, with over 3,000 gun manufacturing facilities nationwide in 2021, you certainly have your pick of weapon. Using a report from Gungenius, which analyzed sales data from Gunbroker.com, 24/7 Wall St. identified the top 24 U.S. gun manufacturers. Firearm brands are ranked by 2023 sales reported by the online platform, though exact sales figures were not provided. It’s important to note that this list was compiled using online gun sales only. (These are the top-selling guns of all time, ranked.)

Why Is This Important?

On a global scale, the United States represents the largest consumer firearm market. As a result, at least partially, the U.S. is home to many of the world’s top gunmakers. Of the 24 companies on this list, 11 are headquartered in the U.S. and all but four have at least one American manufacturing plant. This means that many of the gun manufacturers on this list significantly uplift and support the U.S. economy while also increasing the amount of jobs. Considering some of these firearm producers are also outside of the U.S. but sell a significant amount of guns online to U.S. customers, learning which firearm manufacturers are most popular also provides a better look at what features and models are most popular with consumers.
