The United States is home to a booming firearms market. In fact, it is the largest in the world. American citizens are proud of their right to bear arms, and this is reflected in the number of citizens who own guns. According to a Gallup poll, over 40% of U.S. residents say they live in a household with at least one gun, and the primary reason for owning a weapon is self-protection.

The firearms market in America continues to grow. This industry was responsible for $90 billion in economic output in 2023, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Information from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives reveals that one million more guns were manufactured between 2020 and 2022 than were made in the entire 10-year period from 2000 to 2010.

Using data from the ATF, 24/7 Wall St. identified the states manufacturing the most firearms. States are ranked on the total number of firearms produced by in-state gunmakers in 2022, the latest year of available data. Supplemental data on arms and ammunition industry employment and direct economic impact in 2023 are from the NSSF.

Across states, there is a wide range in the number of weapons produced. For example, Hawaii produced a mere 17 firearms in 2022, while New Hampshire managed to create 2.9 million guns, which is the greatest by far. Only four of the 50 states were responsible for manufacturing over 1 million guns. These include New Hampshire, Texas, Georgia, and Missouri.

Why It Matters

Firearm sales have hit unprecedented highs in the U.S. in recent years. To meet growing demand, many of the world’s largest gunmakers have manufacturing operations in the United States. Each of the 50 states is home to at least one federally licensed gunmaker, and in several states, guns and ammunition is a billion-dollar industry.
