NATO operates on a principle of collective defence. This principle posits that an attack on a NATO member is, essentially, an attack on the other 31 members. As such, any attack on a NATO country could be responded to with the collective force of 32 member countries. While NATO has only invoked Article 5 — which enshrines this principle — once, after 9/11, NATO forces have stepped in for collective defence measures in areas like Syria or Ukraine. Tanks are often used for ground operations in conflict-ridden situations to offer protection, counter enemies, and engage in short-range defense. Many NATO countries — though not all of them — have immense amounts of tanks to support their military needs, and to assist other members in times of need. Although not every NATO country has the same number of tanks, some bring other strategic benefits to the alliance. However, tanks represent a huge amount of power and a strong deterrant force against conflict. Here, 24/7 Wall St. set out to identify the NATO countries with the most tanks. To do so, we reviewed 2024 Military Strength Ranking from Global Firepower, an annually updated defense-related statistics website with information on 145 countries. Countries were ranked on the total number of tanks in their arsenal. We included supplemental information regarding the total military vehicles, artillery, and MLRS units, as well as each country’s overall military strength score. We excluded NATO members that do not have any tanks. The tanks in these arsenals range from older models to newer, more technological armored vehicles, but it’s clear that — regardless of age — these tanks highly support a range of military operations.

Not every NATO country is heavily armed. In fact, Iceland and Luxembourg own no tanks, reliant on other NATO members for protection. Knowing which NATO countries have the most tanks reveals where the military alliance’s strengths exist.
