24/7 Wall St. Insights
- The Mikoyan MiG-31 fighter jet has the highest operational ceiling at 67,651 feet – which is nearly 13 miles off the ground, or over 2x as high as Mt. Everest.
- High operational ceilings can assist fighter jets in stealth missions, attacks, or even evading enemy aircraft.
- With a maximum operational ceiling of 49,213 ft, the F-16V (Viper) comes in last on our list – though this is still an impressive 9.32 miles high.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has been going on for years at this point, with seemingly no end point in the future. Conflicts over territory and governance have plagued the region. While Vladimir Putin originally urged Russia to invade Ukraine, the tides have turned, with Ukraine recently making headway into Russia’s Kursk region. Now, Russia has been hit with another roadblock after Ukraine drone attacks heavily hit the Savasleyka military airbase. During the attack, five Russian aircraft were destroyed, including an MiG-31 fighter jet. MiG-31 fighter jets play a key role in Russia’s air defense strategy. The destruction of this fighter jet is a huge blow to Russia’s defense capabilities and shows how Ukraine may be taking hold of power in the region. (In this country, 98% of citizens reject Putin.)
Most modern fighter jets like the MiG-31 aircraft play crucial roles in military defense based on their unique abilities. These aircraft are designed to handle impressive altitudes, and to reach them fairly quickly. Having the ability to operate in practically endless space above the battlefield has its advantages, but when enemy forces have the technology, like S-400 surface-to-air-missile batteries, things become more difficult. Either a higher degree of stealth is needed, or different tactics need to be employed.
Here, 24/7 Wall St. is taking a look at the fighter jets that can operate at the highest altitudes. To determine the fighter jets that have the highest operational ceiling, 24/7 Wall St. referenced Military Factory, an online database of military vehicles, aircraft, arms, and more. Aircraft were ranked by the maximum flight ceiling that they could reach. Supplemental data regarding manufacturer, speed, and more also came from Military Factory.
As we’ve already shared, Russia is home to one of the top jets on this list in the MiG-31 Foxhound. It was originally built during the Soviet-era but is still very much in use today. It has an operational ceiling of more than 12 miles, making it an aviation leader.
The MiG-31 is a supersonic interceptor aircraft that was designed for long-range, high-altitude missions. Its ability to operate at extreme altitudes enables it to intercept high-flying reconnaissance aircraft and missiles. Other impressive aircraft on this list include the Mirage F1 and Sukhoi Su-57. Why Are We Covering This?
If you want to understand military and modern air combat capabilities, understanding the operational flight ceiling is a good start. Flying so high above the ground allows these fighter jets to provide both tactical and strategic advances. Since fighter jets are used in so many capacities, from surveilling an area to attacking or intercepting enemies, the operational ceiling gives them more room to work. Knowing these aircraft also helps in threat assessment and developing countermeasures.
