The United States’ Army is our country’s first line of defense and has been a huge part of our nation for centuries. Formed in 1775, it even predates the Declaration of Independence. Originally commanded under George Washington, this collection of infantry men eventually grew into the U.S. Army, which employs over 350,000 people as of 2023. Prioritizing loyalty, respect, and duty, the U.S. Army works in tandem with several other military branches, such as the Air Force and the Navy.
We usually think of the member of our Army soldiers serving in the line of duty. We envision these troops dressed in fatigues, training and preparing for potential battle, perhaps manning machinery or running task forces. But the army employs a wide range of skilled people and offers roughly 200 career options. Men and women in the armed forces work as doctors, analysts, information technologists, and healthcare personnel, to name a few.
As the country churned in the throes of the pandemic, recruitment numbers fell and have had a tough time recovering. As with any industry, when you need to increase your ranks, sometimes there is a need for incentives. Incentives come in many forms, from healthcare, paid leave, flexible time, and bonus structures. In 2021, the military realized incentives were necessary to compensate for their 15,000-recruit deficit. Thankfully, according to the U.S. Department of Defense’s website, “the situation is looking up.”
Enlistment bonuses can reach $50,000, while reserve enlistment bonuses can reach up to $20,000. To recruit people fast, the quick ship bonus for those willing to start basic training ahead of a certain date can reach $40,000. As enticing as these bonuses are, the Army is willing to pay even higher signing bonuses to certain professionals. There are 12 jobs on the list for which the U.S. Army will award a signing bonus of six figures. Most of the big payday offerings go toward those in the healthcare field, with top dollar going to anesthesiologists and neurosurgeons ($600,000), psychiatrists ($500,000), and comprehensive dentists ($400,000).
To find the professions or jobs that the Army gives the biggest enlistment or signing bonuses to, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the U.S. Army site about Careers and Jobs in the U.S. Army. Jobs are ranked by their maximum bonus amount. Only one profession per bonus is headlined, with the rest (if any others were noted) listed under “other professions.” This list is not comprehensive, and the Army can change the amount at any time depending on needs. It is important to note that these are the maximum bonuses, and the Army has several considerations when deciding the actual bonus amount.
Why Are We Writing About Military Bonuses?
In 2023, the United States government spent 13.3% of its budget on military, spending more on defense than any other country in the G7. This seemingly minimal 13.3% makes up $820.3 billion dollars. Further, the Department of Defense has requested $842.0 billion for 2024. Government budgets equate to government contracts; and contracts mean money is filtered into our economy through industry in the private sector. Keeping our military healthy through monetary incentives is just one way America maintains its position on the world stage.
