As conflict continues to worsen in the Middle East, the U.S. Department of Defense is sending a squadron of fighter jets to the region. The move follows the deaths of both a Hamas leader and a Hezbollah leader, stirring tensions in the area. President Joe Biden plans to send the fighter jets in an attempt to keep the peace at a time when Israel is clashing with Iran and many other neighboring countries. (Find out what happens if Israel and Iran go to war.)
The use of fighter aircraft to control conflict is nothing new. Throughout history, fighter jets were used during the Korean War, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War, among others. Fighter aircraft have a multitude of applications, from stealth and reconnaissance to precise air strikes and supporting troops on the ground. Today’s modern fighter jets are designed to handle impressive altitudes, and to reach them fairly quickly. (Here are the most widely used fighter jets on Earth.)
Having the ability to operate in practically endless space above the battlefield has its advantages, but when enemy forces have the technology, like Russia’s S-400 surface-to-air-missile batteries, things become more difficult. Either a higher degree of stealth is needed, or different tactics need to be employed.
24/7 Wall St. is looking at which modern fighter jets can ascend in altitude the fastest. To determine the fighter jets that have the highest fastest vertical climb rate, 24/7 Wall St. referenced Military Factory, an online database of military vehicles, aircraft, arms, and more. Aircraft were ranked by their maximum rate of climb as measured by feet per minute. In situations where maximum rate of climb was the same, we used top speed to break the tie. Supplemental data regarding manufacturer, speed, and more also came from Military Factory.
Here is a look at the fighter jets with the fastest vertical climb rate:
Why Are We Covering This?
Vertical climb is a key way to measure how effective and efficient a military aircraft is. By climbing to serious heights, fighter jet pilots can evade potential conflicts or gain tactical in-air advantages. Understanding the operational capabilities of fighter jets provides insight into global military defense strategies. Also knowing these aircraft helps in threat assessment and the development of effective countermeasures.
