In February 2024, Russia’s Spetsnaz (the country’s Special Operations forces) were told by Minister Aleksei Chekunkov that the Spetsnaz’s specialized knowledge would be helpful in Arctic operations. Chekunkov is working with groups across Russia’s far northern and eastern areas to improve economic development. The Spetsnaz, more specifically, will be used to advance production of military weapons and other resources. It remains unclear how immersive their experience will be, or exactly what Russia’s Ministry of the Far East and Arctic is planning. What is clear is how much trust Russia places in its Special Forces, not only in the country but in other areas like the Russia-Ukraine War. Russia’s Spetsnaz are trained in unconventional warfare and skilled at tactics such as reconnaissance and guerrilla or political warfare. The Special Forces personnel use a wide range of weapons. Some are standardized for the Russian army, but others are more specialized. To provide you with a deeper look into what weapons Spetsnaz Special Forces use, 24/7 Wall St. took a closer look at the unit’s small arms and weapons. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed a catalog of small arms from Military Factory, an online database of military vehicles, aircraft, and arms. We excluded overly similar guns and guns believed no longer in use by the Special Forces. We ranked the remaining guns by when they entered service. Supplemental data on the type of weapon, maximum effective range, and the caliber of ammunition used also came from Military Factory.
This list includes a wide range of weapons from silenced assault rifles to automatic grenade launchers. Each weapon plays a role in Special Forces’ missions, such as quiet extractions or guerrilla warfare. One of the more popular weapons on this list is the Dragunov SVD, a semi-automatic sniper/designated marksman rifle. Entering service in the early 1960s, this rifle was based on the Kalashnikov system, but it has a lighter and smaller footprint that offers improved accuracy.
