The Glock 19M is the primary weapon new agents at the FBI are trained on. According to the FBI website, the FBI Academy also teaches students how to shoot a shotgun and carbine. After graduation, FBI agents are expected to be competent and familiar with their weapons to not only defend themselves but also defend the lives they have sworn to protect.
24/7 Wall St. identified the firearms used by federal agents by using a range of government documents, as well as media coverage and private sector press releases. However, this list is not comprehensive, as there are limitations on publically available information. In addition, this list only includes firearms verified to be in use, currently or recently, by certain federal agencies. Listed base prices are estimates only and can vary widely – and several of these weapons are not for sale to the general public.
Because many federal law enforcement jobs are high-risk, agents may need to be armed while on duty. Federal agents that may need to carry weapons include the FBI, the CIA, other intelligence organizations, the Department of Homeland Security, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
In much of the country, semi-automatic handguns are standard issue sidearms for law enforcement and comprise the majority found here. The most commonly-issued pistols on this list are made by major manufacturers, including Glock and Sig Sauer. (Here is a look at America’s largest gunmakers.)
This list also includes more specialized weapons suited to specific purposes and circumstances. These include shotguns, long-range rifles, assault rifles, and submachine guns. Some of these types of weapons are reserved for special units within an agency, such as FBI SWAT teams and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Tactical Units. (Here is a look at America’s 17 most elite special forces.)
Why We’re Writing About Federal Firearms
In America, the firearms industry sustains around 400,000 jobs including manufacturing, distribution, and supply. According to the Firearm Industry Trade Association, the firearms industry brought in $90.06 billion to the country in 2023. While many gun owners in the US are civilians, the government employs thousands of American men and women across multiple law enforcement and espionage agencies who are often required to carry protection.
Here are firearms used by U.S. federal agents.
