We Ranked the Countries that Manufacture America’s Favorite Foreign-Made Rifles

On July 7th, the Washington Post reported that the Supreme Court’s landmark 2022 decision, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, may have caused more confusion that clarification regarding America’s gun laws. Regardless of how the Bruen ruling has affected gun ownership, one thing remains clear: Americans love their guns. A Gallup poll revealed 32% of Americans own guns, while 44% live in a gun-owning home. Though statistics show a prevalence for handguns, there is also great interest in rifles.

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, domestic gun manufacturers produced roughly 3.9 million rifles in 2021. This was a 42.5% increase from 2020, and double the amount made in 2019. These numbers reflect a growing interest in rifles.

To determine which countries make America’s favorite foreign-produced rifles, the staff of 24/7 Wall St. analyzed data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ National Firearms Commerce and Tracking Assessment report. The following 10 countries make up about 87% of all U.S. imported rifles between the years of 2010 and 2020.

Collectively, 9.4 million rifles were imported to America during the 2010-2020 decade. Of the 10 countries on our list, six are European, one is Asian, one in South American, and one is North American. The remaining country is Eurasia’s Russia. These rifles range from typical hunting rifles to military-type, assault-style rifles.

The bulk of the foreign-made rifles do not come from far abroad. Cananda accounts for over 30% of imported rifles, sending 2,773,137 of these guns to the States between 2010 and 2020. Alternatively, Italy earns the number 10 spot on this list, providing Americans with 3% of all imported rifles. Other top importers include Brazil and Japan.
