This Country Has the Most Tanks, and It’s Not Even Close

Recently, dozens of military tanks were spotted traveling down the railroad line in Charleston, South Carolina. Images of the tanks lined up at the Columbus Street Terminal were taken on May 31, 2024. The sight led some to speculate if perhaps the tanks were being shipped off to aid Ukraine in its war efforts. Since January 2024, Statista reports the U.S., along with other world powers, has sent 45 war tanks to Ukraine. However, Poland tops the list having committed 270 tanks to Ukraine this year. As it turns out, the tanks in Charleston were headed somewhere, but not Ukraine, according to sources that spoke to The Post and Courier, leading 24/7 Wall St. to wonder which countries dominate in the number of battle tanks in their arsenals. (This is the latest generation of modern-era tanks.)

To determine the countries with the most tanks, 24/7 Wall St. analyzed data from Military Strength Ranking from Global Firepower, an annually updated defense-related statistics website with information on 145 countries. We ranked countries by total number of tanks, starting with the least amount first. Additionally, we included information on the overall amount of military vehicles, artillery, and MLRS units, as well as each country’s military strength score.

Despite the U.S.’s strong advantage around the globe in terms of military power, America did not make the top of the list regarding its number of tanks. American military strength relies mainly on its Air Force and Navy, and less on ground forces. However, when the need arises for troops on the ground, the U.S. has the tank power to back them up. Interestingly, North Korea is near the top of the pack leading the U.S. and many other nations. Yet, it should be noted its arsenal is full of aging tanks, many from the 1950s and 1960s leftover from the Korean War.

Although tanks may not be as important now as they once were, as military technology and tactics continue to evolve, they are still an integral part of any ground defense or invasion providing armored support to troops and holding the front line. (These are revolutionary vehicles that transformed warfare.)

The U.S. may not rely on ground tanks as heavily now as it did in the past, but they still play an important role in national defense. Understanding how different militaries around the globe operate helps 24/7 Wall St. readers have insight into the use of military power around the world.
