This summer marks the 73rd year of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a prestigious auto show held yearly in California. On August 18, 2024, attendees can witness a competition for the Best of Show among the world’s most luxurious vehicles. This elegant, classic car is equipped with a four-speed manual transmission, which would have been standard at the time.
Manual transmissions used to be the norm in cars, and anyone learning to drive also had to learn how to shift gears. But at some point over the past several decades, manual transmissions became so rare that many young people today have never even been in a car with a stick shift, let alone learned how to drive one. The majority of adults (82% according to U.S. News and World Report) cannot drive a car with manual gears. However, manual transmission cars will likely always have their fans. As proponents of the dying art will tell you, manual transmissions offer a more engaging driving experience by giving motorists greater control over, and connection with, their vehicle.
While this corner of the market has been all but written off by some automakers in recent years, there are still over two dozen late-model vehicles available with standard transmission. Using data from the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy, 24/7 Wall St. identified the cars and trucks you can still buy with manual transmission. While most of the cars here are sport and luxury models, often higher-end, there are also several more practical vehicles, many of which are affordable to a broader range of budgets. Though automatic transmissions are more convenient, according to Edmunds, manual transmission cars do have their benefits. They are often less expensive than those with automatic transmissions, repairs are cheaper, and the resale value may be higher on sports models. Beyond that, manual transmission enthusiasts prefer control over the gears and enjoy the engagement involved in shifting. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference.
